Art in the Park
One of the many annual events that take place in veterans Park in Sierra Vista, AZ is “Art in The Park”. The 51st running of Art in the Park, sponsored by the Huachuca Art Association, is happening as I write this article. For the past few years our troop, 464, has been honored to support the event by doing trash pickup for the event on Saturday and Sunday.
This service project allows the scouts to keep their promise as in the Scout Oath “to help other people at all times.” While a Scout aspires to do his best to help other people every day, a group service project, like this, is a bigger way to help people. While they’re giving service, they’re learning to work together with others to do something that’s good for our community. Helpfulness is also a tenant of the 12 points of the Scout Law that says “Helpful: Volunteer to help others without expecting a reward. Our scouts handle emptying the barrels and replacing trash bags in all the trash cans scattered throughout the event area. The scouts fill two-hour shifts throughout each day. They monitor each trash can and empty them as needed. In addition to “taking out the trash”, the scouts’ man a small table where a troop fund raising project sells meat sticks. pic
The meat stick snacks come in an assortment of flavors covering the salvatory range of spicy with “Ghost Fire” (made from flaming hot habaneros and real ghost peppers), Cajun Hot Style, and Mango Habanero to the mild “Original Smoked Hickory”. We even have several sweet sticks and a crowd favorite, the “Pickle Stick” featuring a crisp dill flavor with a touch of garlic and vinegar.
Along with Troop 464, Cub Scout Pack 464 (Troop 464’s feeder pack) also participated in a fund raiser at Art in the Park. They set up a table near Troop 464 and were selling everyone’s favorite popcorn. 
If you didn’t get a chance to come out to Art in The Park this year, add it to your calendar for next year when the 52nd running of Art in The Park reappears on October 5th and 6th of 2024.
