Catalina Council in Discussion on Pros and Cons of Merging with Grand Canyon Council

Over the past several years the Boy Scouts of America has been trying to restructure itself to save money and consolidate due to loss of membership and other financial struggles. They recently changed their name to Scouting America, the first time in 115 years. Part of the restructure process is to consolidate low membership councils into larger councils. It is happening all across America. We here in Arizona have basically two councils, The Grand Canyon Council in the northern part of the state and Catalina Council in the southern part. For the past few months, the two councils have been in discussions to see if we could merge and become one, primarily in an effort to stave off a possibly mandatory merger imposed by the national headquarters.

A decision was to be made by the end of March and the two councils were highly favored to merge on 1 May. That decision to merge did not pan out as expected and Catalina Council is now focusing its efforts on continuing forward as an independent council serving southern Arizona in the near term.
