Community Clean-Up Day

The Arizona “Adopt a Highway” program provides an opportunity for community members, businesses, and organizations to help keep our highways litter free. So, toward that effort BSA Troop 464 and AHG Troop AZ 1464 assisted the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal organization that supports the Roman Catholic Church, to pick up trash along a one mile stretch of the US highway 90 bypass this July 1st morning. Bright and early, we met at the Sierra Vista Police station parking lot for donuts, drinks, safety gear and a safety briefing at 7:00 AM, before heading out to the highway.

The scouts enjoyed themselves and even found a few items of interest that people indiscriminately toss away along the side of the road. Among the usual assorted paper and plastics bottle stuff, one scout found a discarded garage door opener and another scout phone a cell phone in pretty good condition. These clean-up opportunities for the scouts to participate in a community service project happen pretty much quarterly. Our next scheduled clean-up event will be in October. These clean-up opportunities help re-enforce the notion of “leave no trace behind” when we go camping, hiking, or any other outdoor activity.

As always,

Be Prepared

Uncle Ralph
